1,800 families displaced in Manila fires

MANILA, Philippines — Around 1,800 families in Manila were left homeless yesterday after fires struck Port Area and Tondo.
A nearly seven-hour fire burned 200 houses in Barangay 650 in Port Area, according to the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP).
In Tondo, a fire that lasted nine hours destroyed 500 houses and P10 million worth of property in Barangay 123.
The BFP said 300 families in Port Area and 1,500 families in Tondo were displaced.
The fire in Port Area started at 12:03 a.m. while the blaze in Tondo began at 1:55 am.
Twenty-two firetrucks from the Manila Fire Department, 29 from other fire districts and rescue trucks responded.
With fire victims crowded at the community covered court, the Manila city government built temporary shelters made of steel frames and tarpaulin.
The local government vowed to provide hot meals daily as well as financial aid to the affected residents.
