Iloilo cop dies in accidental firing
pILOILO CITY, Philippines — A policeman died in what was believed to be a case of accidental firing in a hotel in this city yesterday.
S/Sgt. Erwin Daniel of the city’s police Special Weapons and Tactics team suffered a gunshot wound in the chest and was declared dead on arrival at the Iloilo Doctors’ Hospital, according to a report of the Iloilo City police.
Daniel was billeted at the Highway 21 Hotel with his wife and two children when the incident occurred.
Police Station 1 commander Maj. Shella Mae Sangrines declined to give details as the case is under investigation.
There were reports that Daniel could have committed suicide.
Daniel’s superior Lt. Col. Ricardo Jomuad said he had not noticed anything unusual about the policeman prior to the incident.
Daniel reportedly asked permission from his immediate superior if he could leave for work at 5 a.m. yesterday, saying his family would pick him up.
