6 Manila barangays get food aid ahead of lockdown
MANILA, Philippines — A total of 7,895 food boxes were distributed to residents of six barangays placed under a four-day lockdown starting at midnight last night, the city government of Manila said yesterday.
Public information office chief Julius Leonen said 1,052 food boxes were given to Barangay 185; 958 boxes, Barangay 374; 743 boxes, Barangay 521; 3,549 boxes, Barangay 628; 791 boxes, Barangay 675; and 802 boxes, Barangay 847.
Mayor Isko Moreno placed the barangays under the four-day lockdown, which will end on March 20, following an increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in these areas.
He also ordered the conduct of disease surveillance, massive contact tracing and verification or testing and rapid risk assessment “as the city’s response measures to the imminent danger posed by the resurgence of COVID-19.”
City health deparment data showed that Barangay 675 has 22 active cases; followed by Barangay 521 with 12 active cases; Barangay 185, 11 active cases; and Barangays 374, 628 and 847 with 10 active cases each.
The city health department recommended that the six barangays be declared “critical zones” where enhanced community quarantine guidelines would be observed during the lockdown period.
