MANILA, Philippines — Valenzuela Mayor Rex Gatchalian has exempted solo cyclists from wearing a face shield because of the risks it poses while biking on the road.

In his Executive Order No. 2020-347 dated Dec. 21, Gatchalian said wearing a face shield is dangerous for cyclists as it hampers their vision on the road.

Sweat and moisture could obstruct their view if cyclists are mandated to wear face shields, according to the order. Wearing face shields could also make breathing difficult for the cyclists.

“So as not to impede mobility, productivity, and safety of the wearer, face shields may be temporarily lifted, set aside, or removed where the wearing of the same hampers, or causes hazard to the biker while biking alone in Valenzuela,” Gatchalian said.

But cyclists will again be required to wear face shields when entering establishments in Valenzuela.
