Sea mishap victim’s kin cry for justice

Gilbert Bayoran - The Philippine Star

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines —  Relatives of a fisherman, who died when a roll-on roll-off vessel rammed his boat in the waters off Escalante in Negros Occidental, are crying for justice for the victim.

The victim, identified as JR Caspe, 29, died on Sept. 1, according to his father Enrique, who was in another boat when the incident occurred.

Enrique said he found the body of his son floating in the coastal waters off Barangay Washington along with the broken parts of the boat.

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) sub-station in Escalante said it assisted Enrique in recovering his son’s remains as well as the victim’s boat.

PCG sub-station chief Joel Taganile refused to identify the company that owns the vessel involved in the incident.

A team has been formed to investigate the collision.

Enrique said they would not press charges against the crewmembers of the vessel if the company accepts its responsibility over the incident and extend help to the victim’s family.
