PCR-based test sought for OFWs
MANILA, Philippines — The League of Provinces of the Philippines (LPP) is pushing for stringent testing protocols for returning overseas Filipino workers after some OFWs tested positive for coronavirus disease 2019 or COVID-19 upon their arrival in their provinces.
LPP president and Marinduque Gov. Presbitero Velasco Jr. yesterday appealed to the government to subject the OFWs to polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based testing before they are allowed to go back to their hometowns.
Velasco issued the appeal after some OFWs, despite undergoing quarantine for 14 days, tested positive in rapid tests conducted by their respective local government units.
“Among the areas where returning OFWs tested positive for the virus were in the cities of Bacolod and Cebu, and the province of Iloilo,” Velasco said.
He urged Health Secretary Francisco Duque III to issue certificates clearing the OFWs of the disease before allowing them to go home.
