Gov't recovers 1.1-hectare prime property in Pasig City

Dennis Carcamo - The Philippine Star
MANILA, Philippines - The Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG) has recovered the 1.1 hectare prime property in Pasig City surrendered by Marcos associate Jose Campos, in 1986.

In a statement, the PCGG said the property was recovered with the help of the Mid-Pasig Land Development Corp. (MPLDC), a corporation surrendered to the government.

"This property forms part of the 18.5 hectare Payanig sa Pasig estate which was surrendered by Marcos associate, Jose Yao Campos, to the PCGG in 1986," the statement read.

The PCGG said that last October 21, the Pasig  City Metropolitan Trial Court Judge Marilou Runes Tumang issued an order granting the Motion for Execution filed the Office of the Solicitor General.

The court sheriff, together with PCGG and Office of the Solicitor General lawyers and the Pasig police, implemented the order last Wednesday, evicting more than 25 affected tenants.

The order stemmed from the unlawful detainer with damages case that was filed by the PCGG and MPLDC against Gold Park Inc. (GPI), where they sought to recover the surrendered property. The court ordered GPI, and the tenants to vacate and surrender to the government.

The court directed tenants to pay P44.6 million as rent in arrears from December 2001 to October 2006.

The court also ordered GPI to pay P770,000 per month while "it remained in possession of the property" plus legal interest.

"The government continues to lose income from the 'Payanig' as a result of the illegal tenants occupying a significant portion of the estate," the PCGG said.

As of June 2013, the PCGG said that total losses have amounted to more than P1 billion.

Other similar cases against the illegal tenants in the property are still pending with the Pasig regional trial court, the PCGG said.
