MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines will be heavily represented in the nomination race for the inaugural Best Asian Pop Music Performance category of the Grammy Awards.

Asian Pop is one of five new categories being introduced at the upcoming ceremony although its announcement drew backlash from industry leaders especially Asian artists.

The Recording Academy, which organized the Grammys, ultimately decided to keep the category in contention but with some reservations.

P-pop groups SB19 and BINI were the first to declare submissions in the category for voting consideration: SB19 pitched "Visa" while BINI entered "Unang Kilig."

That was on top of SB19 entering "Lawless" in the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance category where another local musical group Ben&Ben put up the reimagined version of its song "Leaves."

Meanwhile, BINI is vying for Best New Artist and Best Song Written for Visual Media with its "Forgotten Island" track "A Parallel World."

Filipino singers Maymay Entrata, Carmelle Collado, Khimo Gumatay and Thomas Orlina as well as rising girl group Baby Dolls are also campaigning for Best Asian Pop Music Performance.

Maymay submitted her track "Masunog Man," Carmelle entered "Morena," Khimo put up "Isayaw Mo Lang," Orlina has "Magsayaw na Tayo," and Baby Dolls are pitching viral hit "Oohh Lala Baby."

Now local pop-rock band Cup of Joe is latest artist to join the Asian Pop race after declaring track "Sandali" from its extended play of the same name for Grammys consideration.

"Mula sa mga awit na atin lang munang pinagsasaluhan, hanggang sa mga pangarap na unti-unti nating naaabot," the act said on social media upon announcing its campaign.

"Maraming salamat, Joewahs, sa pakikinig at sa patuloy na pagsama sa amin," the band also told its fans. "Ang bawat hakbang ay mas nagiging makabuluhan dahil kasama namin kayo."

Active Recording Academy members can review official submissions and cast their ballots for nominees until October 22.

Nominees for the 69th Grammy Awards will be announced on November 16 ahead of the ceremony on Feb. 7, 2027.
