MANILA, Philippines — Ramon S. Ang, San Miguel Corp. president and CEO, yesterday turned over a personal donation of P1 million to Operation Damayan, expressing support for The STAR’s fund-raising efforts for typhoon-hit areas in Luzon.

In addition, San Miguel Corp. (SMC) also committed to donate 120 boxes comprising 24 canned goods per box for distribution to evacuees in Cagayan.

SMC has been at the helm of private sector response to the COVID-19 pandemic as well as recent typhoons and has drawn much praise for spearheading various social responsibility initiatives.

The private and corporate donations were relayed to Philippine STAR president and CEO Miguel Belmonte, who also personally assures donors that their assistance is well spent and reaches intended beneficiaries.

The STAR also received yesterday 47 boxes or over P100,000 worth of face masks and face shields from Alex Tan of Tritan Ventures Inc. Tan coursed his donations thru STAR entertainment editor Ricky Lo, his kababayan from Samar.

Other personal donations received yesterday came from the generosity of Rene and Claire Henson, P50,000; New Heminway Office Machine, P10,000; and Bassel Manadil, P5,000. Funds raised for Damayan’s calamity assistance have thus far topped P4 million.

Operation Damayan, which serves as the humanitarian arm of the Philstar Media Group and comprises volunteer employees led by STAR’s HR head Emie Cruz, has been coordinating with Archbishop Ricardo Baccay of the Archdiocese of Tuguegarao and Fr. Bernie Corpus, rector of the St. Peter Metropolitan Cathedral, for the distribution of relief assistance to evacuees situated in four sites throughout the city in the coming days.

The relief drive for typhoon-hit families in Cagayan remains open to cash donations only until today.
