MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police on Thursday night announced 60 new COVID-19 infections among its personnel.

This brings the total number of coronavirus cases in the PNP to 2,407.

In a post to its Facebook page, the PNP also reported that 1,428 officers recovered from coronavirus, while fatalities remained at 11.

National police added that it is monitoring 893 probable and 2,379 suspected cases among its ranks.

Figures sent to reporters show that 39 of the newly logged infections, a vast majority, were from the National Capital Region Police Office.

President Rodrigo Duterte recently placed Metro Manila and nearby provinces under modified enhanced community quarantine from August 4 to August 18 in an effort to curb the alarming surge in COVID-19 cases.

As the country continues to grapple with the pandemic, Thursday marked the crossing of a grim milestone.

With 3,561 additional novel coronavirus cases, bringing the national caseload to 119, 460, the Philippines surpassed Indonesia as the worst-hit country in Southeast Asia. — Bella Perez-Rubio
