Duterte to name Guerrero as next Marina chief

MANILA, Philippines — Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief Gen. Rey Leonardo Guerrero will be the next administrator of the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA).

President Duterte, during his visit yesterday to Camp General Manuel T. Yan Sr. in Compostela Valley, said he would appoint Guerrero as MARINA chief to replace former agency administrator Marcial Amaro III.

“Iyang si Jagger pagkatapos niyan, siya iyong maghawak ng MARINA na pinaalis ko kay sige Travel (Jagger will handle MARINA after his term to replace Travel),” Duterte said, referring to Guerrero and Amaro.

Duterte fired Amaro for excessive foreign travels, with at least 24 made since he was appointed to his post in 2016.

A member of the Philippine Military Academy class of 1984, Guerrero reached the mandatory retirement age of 56 last Dec. 17.

The President has extended Guerrero’s term to April 24.

After his retirement, Guerrero will join the more than 50 former military officials who are now handling civilian posts.
