MANILA, Philippines - President Duterte yesterday consoled Sen. Manny Pacquiao after the boxing icon lost to Australian Jeff Horn in a controversial match last weekend in Brisbane.
“Panahon-panahon lang yan, senator, weather-weather lang ang buhay (In life, there is a season for everything),” Duterte said during his speech when he visited the 102nd Infantry Brigade, 10th Infantry Division of the Philippine Army at Camp Brig. Gen. Herminigildo A. Agaab in Sarangani.
The Games and Amusement Board yesterday asked the World Boxing Organization to review Sunday’s fight after sports analysts questioned the result.
Duterte also asked the troops to applaud Pacquiao and thanked the senator and local government officials who supported his declaration of martial law in the island.
The President noted that the martial rule declaration has various interpretations from many groups, but it is good that “military-minded” Senators Panfilo Lacson and Gregorio Honasan understand his decision.
“For others, magkaiba (they have a different perspective) but we have to defend the Republic of the Philippines,” he added. – With Christina Mendez
