TV5 apologizes for delay in presidential debate

Philstar.com

MANILA, Philippines — The management of TV5 issued an apology following the delay in the second presidential debate on Sunday afternoon.

News5 chief Luchi Cruz-Valdes admitted to committing an error in communicating to the party of Vice President Jejomar Binay.

Valdes allowed Binay to bring and refer to his notes during the debate which was against the rules of the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

"Before the debate started, the COMELEC clarified that it has been its standing rule that notes are not allowed during the debate proper but may refer and review in between breaks. Ms. Luchi Cruz-Valdes and the management of TV5 take full responsibility for the confusion and disagreement," TV5 said in a statement.

The management, the poll body and the presidential candidates decided to push through with the debates despite technical and procedural issues.

The debate at the University of the Philippines in Cebu City was scheduled to start at 5 p.m., but only started around 6:30 pm. — Patricia Lourdes Viray
