Duterte a no-show on last day of candidacy filing

MANILA, Philippines — Minutes before the Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Friday closed the filing of candidacy certificates, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte insisted he is not interested in the presidency.

The iron-fisted local executive issued the statement despite the clamor of his supporters outside the Comelec main office in Intramuros, Manila for him to seek the top government post in the country.

"A little over two years ago, I posted in the government website over the Internet that I was not interested in the Presidency. Nothing has changed," Duterte said in a statement.

Duterte added that he is tired and wants to retire.

"Give the presidency to the one who wants it. I don’t," Duterte said.

On social media, the topic #DuterteSerye climbed the top of Twitter trends in the Philippines as rumors that Duterte was somewhere in Manila circulated.
