MANILA, Philippines — Universal Pictures released the full theatrical trailer for "Wicked," starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, the first of a two-part film adaptation of the popular Broadway musical.
The trailer begins with a voice narrating "Are people born Wicked? Or do they have Wickedness thrust upon them?" It refers to the musical's opening number "No One Mourns the Wicked."
Grande's Glinda and Erivo's Elphaba meet at Shiz University, where they are all are surprised to see Elphaba has green skin.
Michelle Yeoh's Madame Morrible welcomes the new students and says Elphaba will be roommates with Glinda.
Hints of "Popular" ring through as Glinda shows Elphaba their room, with little space left for Elphaba. More characters, meanwhile, are shown like Jonathan Bailey's Fiyero and Peter Dinklage voicing Doctor Dillamond.
Elphaba's magical powers begin to grow strong, which impresses Madame Morrible, and causes Glinda to be jealous. The latter teases Elphaba by offering her grandmother's hat to wear at a party.
"Defying Gravity" is teased while students are at the party where they all laugh at Elphaba.

"She doesn't give a tweak what anyone thinks," Fieryo says, to which Glinda responds after a change of heart, "Of course she does, she just pretends not to."
Elphaba receives an invitation from the Wonderful Wizard of Oz, played by Jeff Goldblum, and asks Glinda to accompany her to the Emerald City.
"The best way to bring folks together is to give them a real good enemy," the Wizard says, not appearing to be what he seems as Elphaba deduces there is something wrong happening in Oz.
Quick clips play as "Defying Gravity" reaches a high note, including Elphaba being branded as a Wicked Witch.
"Don't be afraid," Glinda tells Elphaba as the latter summons a boomstrick, reminisces being mocked and responds, "I'm not afraid. It's the Wizard who should be afraid of me." Erivo then belts her voice over the title card.
Due for a November release, "Wicked" also stars Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang, Bronwyn James, Keala Settle and Adam James. — Video from Universal Pictures Philippines' YouTube channel
