Green Day tops MTV Video Music Awards

SOUNDS FAMILIAR - Baby A. Gil -
It must be MTV season. We just finished congratulating the winners of the MTV Pilipinas 2005 Video Music Awards held a week ago when along came the 2005 MTV Video Music Awards from the US, with its own set of winners. This was held at the hurricane-threatened American Airlines Arena in Miami, Florida last Sunday, Aug. 28. The hurricane Katrina struck with tragic results in some areas but the show went on as scheduled and the dauntless celebrity guests arrived to strut their wares.

The spectacular production numbers harked back to last year’s big winners, Outkast with Hey Ya!, Jay-Z with 99 Problems and Beyoncé’s Naughty Girl and hip-hop ruled the stage. But in an interesting turnabout, it was the rockers who lorded it over the honor roll.

In this case it was Green Day, which kicked off the show with a rousing rendition of its big hit, Boulevard of Broken Dreams. This proved to be an auspicious opening number for the punk rock group because it ended the evening by going home with six of the much-coveted Moon Men trophies. This means those guys got six wins out of six nominations for the same song including the evening’s top plum, Video of the Year and the Viewers’ Choice Award.

Made up of Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool, Green Day has been enjoying an all-time career high these past months. They won over other-equally strong nominees that included Coldplay for Speed of Sound; Kanye West, Jesus Walks; Snoop Dogg featuring Pharrell, Drop It Like It’s Hot; and Gwen Stefani, Hollaback Girl.

The group actually got eight nods. The other two where they lost were for American Idiot, title track of the establishment-basher that was named Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards. It also contains Boulevard of Broken Dreams and the new single, When September Ends. Watch this one soar to the top soon. It boasts of the same lyrical quality that is uniquely Green Day’s as the other two songs. Would you believe now that Green Day also made Dookie?

Back to the MTV Video Music Awards. The event will be aired in the MTV Philippines channel on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 6:30 p.m., with replays on Monday, Sept. 12 at 12 noon, Sunday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m., and Thursday, Sept. 22 at 6 p.m.

Hosted by Diddy, formerly known as P. Diddy who was once Puff Daddy or whatever, the show is a water spectacular in keeping with the beachfront setting. Showstopping performances came from MC Hammer, Ludacris, Shakira, R. Kelly, The Killers, Fat Joe., Coldplay, Kanye West, Mariah Carey, 50 Cent, My Chemical Romance, Kelly Clarkson and Diddy himself, conducting a full orchestra in a tribute to the late Notorious B.I.G. with Snoop Dogg.

Local viewers will also get to see celebrity guests and presenters like Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx, hot couple Hilary Duff and Joel Madden of the rock band Good Charlotte, Orlando Bloom, Kirsten Dunst, Lindsay Lohan, Joss Stone, Ricky Martin, Nelly, Lil Kim, Missy Elliott, Ciara, sisters Ashlee and Jessica Simpson, Jessica Alba, Shaquille O’Neal and many others when they watch this year’s MTV VMA. Sight of the night is reportedly hot desperate housewife Eva Longoria, who wore an eye-popping bikini to introduce Mariah’s medley of We Belong Together and Shake It Off.
