SKINREPUBLIC - Jennifer Toledo-Tan M.D. - The Freeman

Dear Dr. Jen,

Can eating junk food cause pimples?  My mom always blames my pimples on my constant eating of junk food.

Mira

Dear Mira,

No, eating junk food will not cause pimples.  However, certain food that are rich in dairy and sugar were found out lately to be a factor in increasing severity of acne.  I personally find that acne is more strongly associated with genes (hence, this is a draw of the luck) and hormones.

Some though, do find, that cutting back on dairy products, as well as food with a high glycemic index can minimize flare or break outs.  Hope that answers your question.

Dear Dr. Jen,

I developed dry skin on my upper lip.  It stings and hurts when I talk or smile.  I was recently given a course of Acyclovir but the flaking is still present.  In fact, my lips are super dry and cracking now.  What can it be? And most importantly, can it be treated?

Jonna

Dear Jonna,

A number of skin conditions can dry up the upper lip.  Allergy to food or a lip product, seborrheic dermatitis (face dandruff), atopic dermatitis (skin asthma) are just a few of the things it could be.

Acyclovir is an antiviral and your doctor may have initially diagnosed you to have herpes simplex.  This presents with vesicles containing clear fluid usually clustering in a small area.

Whether it's food allergy or dermatitis or a viral infection or plain dry skin, it still needs to be checked.  You can have a PDS derma address the problem and put you on the road to healing.  All it needs may just be a short course of a steroidal cream or a simply good moisturizer.

If you have any questions or concerns please text, email or call (the Freeman or PSH): 0932 857 7070 or <[email protected]> or (032) 233 8620 or 232 5929. Your inquiries will be forwarded to Dr. Tan.
