Nokia goes double talk

- Kathy Moran -

MANILA, Philippines - Double talk or double speak, as defined by Webster, is meaningless speech that consists of nonsense syllables mixed with intelligible words or in other words, gibberish.

There are so many people who use so many words that normally when tied together mean nothing. Just like that last run on sentence. Yet, sometimes people think that the more words they get in the more they are in control of a conversation.

Not.

Yet, in a world where communication rules, people always feel the need to stay in touch, to talk, to stay updated, to chat. And, as always, cellphones take center stage.

Nokia has finally entered into the foray of dual SIMs with its C2-00. It is simple, affordable, has two SIMs on active standby, meaning that you actually have two active lines on the same device.

Life like I know it is made of lots of folks who have two or more cellphones. Now, Nokia has made owning a dual-SIM cellphone affordable and fun. The Nokia C2-00 is an entry-level cellphone that is targeted at those who are on the phone constantly making and receiving calls.

I would consider the Nokia C2-00 truly either an entry-level cellphone or a starter cellphone. It is one of those candybar cellphones which does the job for texting and calling - but not much beyond that.

Yet, there are lots of users in the market today who are on the hunt for cellphones just like this one.

Matter of fact, I was brought back in time when I first saw the C2-00. It reminded me of one of the first cellphones I ever owned. Except that this one, unlike my first Nokia, is a dual-SIM unit.

I love that the Nokia C2-00 has everything familiar and everything that we have come to love about the Nokia cellphone. I am quite sure that this unit is bound to be a hit in this country, not only because it is everything we are familiar with, but more so because it has two SIM cards, something that seems to have become a must for most Pinoy cellphone users.

For those users who travel around the country, those who have relatives living in the province or those who just like to make sure that they always have a signal no matter where they are, then perhaps this Nokia C2-00 is the answer to their cellphone prayers.

Blast from the past

The Nokia C2-00 is very reminiscent of the ‘90s mid-range phones from Nokia with the smooth rounded corners and overall design and construction. The control pad includes a D-Pad below which is the numeric keypad; the age-old format for almost all phones is nostalgic. The D-Pad is used to control the camera as well as volume levels.

I must mention about the battery life which is really crazily long. I kept the C2-00 on for three days with an average of calls of three to five minutes and at least 10 calls a day, and it lasted. With the second SIM active, the phone asks which SIM to use for the call and you can tell it to remember your response by setting the default SIM.

If you are in the market for a no-frills, calls-only and not-interested-in-bling type, then this is the cellphone for you. It’s something that you won’t worry about if it falls or your drinks spill on it; the C2-00 is an affordable solid phone with the Nokia’s solid, almost rugged phone legacy behind it.

The Nokia C2-00 dual-SIM smartphone does not have any internal memory but it is equipped with an external microSD memory card of up to 32GB. It supports Bluetooth but does not go hi-tech as it does not have any GPRS, WLAN, 3G, Infrared or EDGE.

The Nokia C2-00 is a candybar that fits in the pocket or neatly in the bag, can handle two telcos in one go and is capable of taking good enough pictures. It is a great starter cellphone. But don’t let its simple yet cool looks fool you; the C2-00 is a Nokia, that means it comes with everything that we love in a Nokia.

‘Nuff said.
