SMIC to integrate SDG into corporate reports

Iris Gonzales - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — SM Investments Corp. (SMIC) will continue integrating sustainable development goals into corporate reporting.

SM president and chief executive officer Frederic DyBuncio said sustainability is integral to SM’s businesses.

“SM continues to be a partner for sustainable development as we align with the UN SDGs and UN Global Compact both in our operations and reporting standards,” DyBuncio said during the regional summit recently held at the Conrad Manila.

SM, Ayala Corp. and many other Philippine companies are making sustainability a big part of their operations.

The 2019 regional summit builds on the momentum of the first Sustainability Summit of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) held in October 2018 with SM and the Philippine Business for Environment.

Last year, all listed companies within the SM Group published comprehensive sustainability reports, all of which were certified by GRI.

The 17 SDGs or Global Goals are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that people enjoy peace and prosperity, SM said.

For firms to operate over a long period, they must pay attention to things other than the financial bottom line.

These include managing the impact on the global or local environment, community, society and economy.

To reflect companies’ economic, environmental, social and governance performance, a sustainability report is issued by corporations.

The 2019 Summit brought together over 300 CEOs (chief executive officers), sustainability innovators from the business sector, civil society, government regulatory bodies, and development partners.

During the summit, participants shared insights on the importance of driving sustainability in business, partnerships, supply chain transparency and environmental, social and governance reporting & investments to achieve the UN SDGs or global goals.

SMIC is engaged in various businesses such as retail, banking, property and tourism.
