CITEM appeals for more funds to help MSMEs

- Ma. Elisa Osorio  -

MANILA, Philippines - The Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM) appealed yesterday for more funds to help the micro, small and medium sized entrepreneurs (MSMEs) who want to sell their products in the international market.

In an interview, CITEM Executive Director Lourdes Mediran explained that they need money to help MSMEs showcase their wares in international trade fairs and local shows that attract foreign buyers.

The need has become more pronounced after Trade Secretary Gregory L. Domingo said that he would like to change the make up of the Manila FAME, the largest trade fair in the country.

“For our part, expect us to make big changes starting next year,” Domingo said. Manila FAME is usually held twice a year.

For next year, Domingo said that the trade fairs would now be very specific and will focus on apparel and furniture. “Maybe we won’t focus on food anymore,” Domingo said.. He explained that they will retain only products that have a big impact.

Domingo said that the Philippines will only participate in three to five outbound fairs. At present, the country participates in 20 outbound trade fairs.

For her part, Mediran said that she hopes that food will still be included in the products that will be promoted. Although Domingo did not include food, Mediran said that food has been the only industry that posted positive growth.

In fact, she said European countries have been looking for cheaper alternative to the expensive food items. Mediran said that the important thing for the European buyers is safety.

Mediran said that although CITEM only has limited budget, the DOT can focus on design driven products, food and the business process outsourcing (BPO).

The October show of the Manila Fame expects to rate in $50 million worth in sales and orders.
