-

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippines continues to be a major supplier of lauric oil to the United States, delivering 332,800 metric tons (MT) of coconut oil last year.

Lauric oil from the Philippines accounted for 41.8 percent of total lauric oil imports by the US, data from the United Coconut Association of the Philippines (UCAP) showed.

Oil World figures indicate the US imported 796,700 MT of lauric oil in calendar year 2009, 5.7 percent more than the previous year’s 753,400 MT. More than 60 percent of this volume was coconut oil at 484,400 MT while palm kernel comprised the balance of 312,300 MT.

Palm kernel oil exceeded prior year import of 254,300 MT by 22.8 percent, while coconut oil slid from year-ago at 499,100 MT by 2.9 percent.

The Philippines continued to be the top supplier of lauric oil from coconut oil, while Malaysia was the second biggest supplier of lauric oils contributing 35.7 percent at 284,300 MT.     – Marianne Go
