MANILA Philippines – "Depressing."

That's Sen. Grace Poe's blunt assessment of the state of Philippine sports.

A candidate for the presidential race that culminates next week, Poe sat down with the members of Philippine STAR's editorial team last Friday in Manila and shared her vision for the country. And in a candid moment, she shared how sorry she was for the plight of the Filipino athletes.

"Kulang sa support," the former MTRCB chief said. She went on to note that Filipino athletes and the sports programs they subscribe to have a long way to improve, but politics prove to be a great hurdle.

Watch Poe talk about that and more--including specific plans on how she plans on improving the Filipino sportsman's situation if she ever wins--in this clip shot by our multimedia team.

Also, learn what the senator things should be the nation's priority in its long list of sporting events:

Other noteworthy facets of Poe's campaign include her push for good governance, foreign policy, and curbing corruption.

So far, Poe has been the only presidential candidate to touch on the topic of national sports. Davao Mayor Rodrigo Duterte has yet to sit down with the STAR team. — Denison Ray Dalupang; Video by Efigenio Toledo IV
