Workers urged to report violations of high-heel ban

Mayen Jaymalin - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — After the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) issued its order banning the wearing of high heels at worksites, a labor group yesterday urged workers to come out and report any commercial establishments that violate the ban.

The Associated Labor Unions (ALU) said workers should help in ensuring strict compliance to the order that prohibits employers from requiring workers to wear high heels while on duty.

“Workers should report to ALU and to DOLE if there are employers who would not comply so that they can be held liable for violating labor standards,” ALU spokesman Alan Tanjusay said.

He also urged employers to comply with the new policy, which took effect yesterday, to avoid penalties.

Under DOLE Department Order 178-17, employers are also required to provide rest period to sales ladies, teachers and other workers who need to stand for a long period while performing their duties. It said the short breaks would be compensable.

It suggested that workers be allowed to wear practical and comfortable footwear that do not pinch the feet or toes, are well-fitted and non-slipping; provide adequate cushion and support arch of the feet, and flat, low-heeled, wide-based or wedge-type shoes.

Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III said the new policy would be included in the regular inspections for compliance with general labor standards and occupational safety and health regulations.

The order is in line with the Occupational Safety and Health Standards, which mandate the DOLE to formulate policies and implement programs that ensure the safety and welfare of workers.
