Natalie Soto-Carlisle, Jane Iredale’s global lead artist, demonstrates how to apply Jane Iredale’s Amazing Base.

2 Ways To Go For The Glow

Whether paired with a statement lip or smoky eye, one of this season’s hottest trends is glowing skin. If, like me, you’re not naturally luminous in the morning, don’t fret. Creating a faux glow is the easiest thing in the world now, with all the high-tech tools at our disposal. Here are two of the most modern ways to fake it.

Makeup that’s so good for your skin you can actually sleep in it? That’s the reality at Jane Iredale, the mineral makeup pioneer who gave the world Amazing Base loose mineral powder 23 years ago and developed a cult following of devoted, loyal fans.

“She definitely started a trend that a lot of people now are following — the whole healthy aspect of makeup — but she’s still looking for new ways to make the skin healthy,” says Natalie Soto-Carlisle, Jane Iredale’s global lead artist, who was in Manila recently to launch the brand’s fall collection.

“Everything in her products is very soothing to the skin, but not only are the products soothing, they also help protect the skin from environmental and sun damage,” Carlisle says. With SPFs of 20 to 30 (because anything higher than 30 uses chemical sunscreens), all Jane Iredale products are dermatologically certified to prevent skin cancer, and it’s also one of the only makeup lines in the world that can be used after invasive treatments like laser resurfacing and peeling. In fact, in the United States the brand is most commonly available through dermatologists, plastic surgeons’ offices and medical spas.

Here in the Philippines where it’s readily available at Rustan’s, the bestseller is Pure Pressed Powder in Golden Glow because it’s a four-in-one multi-tasker, according to Carlisle: “It’s a powder, foundation, concealer, and sunscreen. You set it with your hydration spray and it turns into more of a liquid finish, so your skin never looks like you’re wearing tons of makeup. But it will give you a very, very full coverage.”
Even young girls just starting to wear makeup can use Jane Iredale because it’s so safe.

Skincare makeup: Jane Iredale’s Naturally Glam makeup collection with Clearly Pink blush, eyeshadow palette, Gwen red lipstick and Paris lip plumper is available at Rustan’s The Beauty Source.

Carlisle says Iredale’s inspiration for the fall collection was bringing glamour to mineral makeup. Called Naturally Glam, “Jane really stepped out of the box for it because she launched a full eye palette with not just very wearable colors, but you can also turn a daytime into a nighttime look,” which Carlisle demonstrated on a Filipina model. For day, she used the lighter bronze and rose-colored shadows on the eye along with the new Paris Lip Plumper — a berry shade that looks great on any skin tone. “It helps to take away the fine lines on the lips while also creating volume.”

For an instant switch to evening there are two darker brown eyeshadows in the palette — one for shading the crease and the other for lining or going even smokier — or you could opt for NMM eyes and a bold red lip with Gwen lipstick, which Iredale calls “the rock-star red.” I love Gwen because it’s so easy to wear and moisturizing (the formula includes antioxidant blackberry, shea butter and avocado), and you can also do the trendy ombre lip with it (Carlisle shows how in a video on the Jane Iredale website).

“The biggest thing for the brand is what’s not in them — how there’s no artificial dyes — but also there’s no petroleum, which is in most lip products, even lip balm,” Carlisle says. “Petroleum is derived from gasoline, and the average woman consumes seven tubes of lipstick in a lifetime. So it was very important to Jane to really branch into the lip category.”

The cheek product in the Naturally Glam collection is Clearly Pink blush, a petal pink with gold sparkle in it. “It’s so finely milled that it doesn’t sit on top of the skin, it just looks like a natural flush,” Carlisle says.

Iredale, an avid gardener who thoughtfully includes a sprig of fresh lavender with each online order, no matter how small, is usually inspired by the colors of the flora in her garden, but Carlisle says they also pull a lot of inspiration from New York Fashion Week. “Like, this collection was really based on New York’s fall collection,” she says. “The ombre lip is a huge trend, also the bold red lip with nothing on the eye.”

But, in the final reckoning, I’ve become a Jane Iredale fan because it’s skincare makeup in classic, wearable colors that flatter everyone. As Carlisle notes about her mentor, “Jane’s favorite saying is, ‘We’re not trendy, but we’re always on-trend.’”

The zero-pore, zero-blemish glow

For more traditional foundation that offers full yet lightweight coverage, trendy Japanese brand Kate Tokyo has developed its Secret Skin Maker line to create the look of zero pores and blemishes.

Kate Tokyo found that the No. 1 concern of young women is a “poor complexion” with pimples and other skin imperfections, so they tend to layer on foundation to cover these blemishes, leading to a heavy, cake-y look and feeling. But, through a high-tech polymer formula that spreads easily and merges with the skin, Kate offers high coverage with a lightweight feel.

There’s Kate Secret Skin Maker Zero liquid foundation and powder, which come in six shades tailored to Asian skin, from light to tanned. The powder is also great for oil control and mattifying, for those with oily or combination skin. The Kate claim is that with one stroke you can even out skin, so no need for heavy layering. If you do need color correction, the line also features a Secret Skin CC Base Zero with pearl powder that visibly brightens and can be applied under the liquid foundation or powder.

If you want a more contoured look, which makeup artist Floe Tapayan says is hot in the Philippines right now, use a deeper foundation shade like No. 5 on the parts of your face you’d like to minimize. Again, the products are so lightweight you won’t feel like there’s a mask on your face.

To go with the season’s glowing skin, the trend in Tokyo is “dark metal” — faking wider-looking eyes with the help of shimmer and sparkle. Kate’s eyeshadow palettes contain five shades that you can mix and match confidently to get sexy, deep-set eyes. Tapayan showed us how on model Mia Ayesa: apply the highlight color all over the eye area, then the medium shade from lid to crease. With a contouring brush, apply the darkest shade from the outer corner into the crease to get depth. Use the top sparkly shade on the center of your lid, and the bottom sparkle on the inner corners to really make your eyes pop.

Other Kate innovations include a Super Sharp eyeliner that’s so fine you can actually draw on lashes with it; Glamorous Lash double-ended mascara with a volumizing base on one end and curved mascara brush on the other; and the bestselling brow palette, with which you can achieve the look of 3D brows.
