SEC sets start of coal-fired plant

Iris Gonzales - The Philippine Star

MAASIM, Sarangani, Philippines  â€” Sarangani Energy Corp. (SEC), a power generation company of the Alcantara Group, announced here on Friday that it is all set to operate the first phase of its 210-megawatt coal-fired power plant in 2015.

In a briefing and plant tour here, SEC vice-president for project implementation Nicandro Fucoy said the P13-billion plant will be operational by October 2015 with an initial capacity of 105-MW and will reach its full capacity of 210 MW in 2016.

With the scheduled operations of the plant by 2015 as well as that of the Aboitiz Group’s 300-MW coal plant in Davao, Joseph Nocos, vice-president for Business Development of Alsons Consolidated Resources Inc., the holding company of the Alcantara Group, said blackouts in Mindanao would come to an end.

“This power shortage will be a thing of the past,” Nocos told reporters.

During the briefing, Fucos said, the Maasim coal fired plant will be utilizing top-of-the line, state of the art technology such as circulating fluidized bed boiler and a steam turbine generator from Fuji Electric Co. of Japan.

The company has tapped South Korea’s Daelim Industrial, Ltd. as the plant’s engineering, procurement and construction contractor.

Fucoy said the Maasim coal plant’s initial 105 MW output will provide power to at least 3.4 million residents of Sarangani, General Santos, Compostela Valley, Agusan del Norte and Agusan del Sur and most parts of Davao del Norte including the cities of Samal and Tagum.

“When the plant reaches full 210-MW capacity in 2016 it will be able to serve an additional 3.8 million people residing in the provinces of Cotabato, South Cotabato and Zamboanga del Norte,” Fucos said.

For his part, Maasim Mayor Aniceto Lopez welcomed the project, saying that 80 percent of the plant’s workforce would be local residents.

“Because of this project, Maasim will develop…. Maasim will be the economic tiger of Region 12,” Lopez said.

Maasim has a population of 62,000 with tuna fishing as the main source of income.
