Phl embassy in KL, POLO take steps vs. sexual harassment of OFWs

Jovan Cerda - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine embassy in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and the Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) have taken measures to protect overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) from sexual harassment in the country, Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz said on Wednesday.

"The Filipino Workers Resource Center, or Bahay Kalinga, in Kuala Lumpur, which is under the operational supervision of the POLO, adopts the policy that only female OFWs in distress are admitted to ensure their protection and avoid even rumors of sexual harassment," said Baldoz, quoting a report from the Philippine embassy.

Male OFWs, on the other hand, are sheltered in the embassy itself which is far from Bahay Kalinga, Baldoz added.

She said there has been no reported cases of sexual harassment committed against migrant Filipino workers since Ambassador J. Eduardo Malaya assumed office.

The embassy reported that its personnel work for the speedy repatriation of distressed OFWs, including illegal workers. It said that at least once a week, Philippine government officials accompany OFWs to the Malaysian government's immigration department.

The POLO in Kuala Lumpur also conducts counseling sessions and skills and livelihood training among OFWs.

"I am happy to note that the POLO is already implementing some of the reform measures I have directed to further enhance and strengthen the operations of the Philippine Overseas Labor Offices and its Bahay Kalinga," Baldoz said.
