2019 Palarong Pambansa: Central Visayas climbs to sixth place
DAVAO CITY, Philippines — Central Visayas moved up one spot in the standings after productive penultimate day of the 2019 Palarong Pambansa yesterday at the University of the Philippines-Mindanao Sports Complex here.
CV athletes climbed one spot from seventh to sixth place as they now have 21 gold, 18 silver and 30 bronze medals going into the final day of the annual multi-sporting event.
After a poor performance at the start of his campaign, archer Phoebe Nicole Amistoso bounced back with a golden finish via the Olympic round . She scored a come-from-behind victory over Ilocos Region’s Garryne Aragon, 6-4. Teammate Maria Ferimi Gleam Bajado got the bronze.
CV’s badminton squad also handed golds courtesy of Hailene Reeze Diaz, while the elementary girls team snared the silver.
Lapu-Lapu’s Jerish Velarde ended the standard chess with a gold and bronze with the young wood pusher winning the individual gold and bronze in the team event along with Michael Jan Stephen Inigo.
In boxing, CV pugs grabbed a gold, silver and bronze medals.
Gerwin Asilo ended his Palaro bid with a gold after winning the youth lightweight division via split decision, 3-2. Flyweight Joseph Sumabong settled with a silver via the youth division after losing the final bout against Northern Mindanao’s Mark Lester Durens, 0-5, while pinweight Freshler Utrera bagged the bronze in the school boys’ division
Over at the pool, Charilyn Allysa Romanos got a silver in the breaststroke event with 1:16.95 clocking as Martin Jose Sayson added a bronze to his collection via the 100-meter breaststroke with 1:08.53.
Perennial champion National Capital Region is now the virtual champ with 76 golds, 69 silvers and 47 bronzes followed by Calabarzon with 53-43-68 gold-silver-bronze, while Western Visayas occupied the third with 46-29-48 medal tally.
