MANILA, Philippines — Kristan Yumul waxed hot from deep to lead the Gilas Pilipinas women U16 team against a pesky Syria team, 92-86, in the FIBA Women's Asian Championship Division B in Amman, Jordan on Saturday.

Yumul made nine 3-pointers en route to a 33-point performance to help Gilas improve to 2-0 in the tournament.

The Philippines needed to deny a comeback effort from the Syria squad, which battled back from as big as 20 points down.

With 2:45 remaining, Syria tied the game at 82-all after a Simel Alahmar free throw.

But Gabby Ramos, who posted a 20-20 statline in the previous game against Indonesia, gave some momentum back to the Philippines with an and-one conversion.

Aya Almohammad made a jumpshot to get Syria within one, 84-85, with 1:45 remaining. But Yumul hit a 3-pointer to give Gilas breathing space anew.

Kailah Jade Oani then converted on a dagger layup after forcing a steal to put Gilas up by six, 90-84, with 50 ticks left.

Ramos and Suzan Backour traded twos to arrive at the final score.

Ramos played supporting role to Yumul with a double-double performance of 21 points and 14 rebounds.

Naomi Panganiban added 13 markers, six rebounds, eight assists and two steals.
