Marcial keeps eyes glued to Tokyo
MANILA, Philippines — Tokyo Olympics qualifier Eumir Felix Marcial yesterday vowed to stick with the Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines and its Olympic program even if he turns pro while preparing for the Games.
In an interview on the Power and Play program on Radyo 5, Marcial said that was what he told ABAP president Ricky Vargas during a recent video conference.
“Sabi ko po sa ating presidente na si sir Ricky Vargas, at sila sir Ed Picson, sa mga coaches, sabi ko kung sakaling papasok ako sa pro, gusto ko at pinapangako ko na until Olympics na sila yung makasama ko sa training at sila po yung magtuturo sa akin kung lalaban ako,” said Marcial.
“Main goal ko pa rin yung Olympics, eh. Yung preparation na ‘yun is for Olympics so sila ang gusto ko makasama,” he added.
The 24-year-old Marcial has been receiving lucrative offers to fight professionally. Under the current rules, he would still be eligible to compete in the Olympics even as a pro.
The 2019 World Championship silver medalist and three-time Southeast Asian Games champion said he has reminded those luring him that the Olympics remains his priority.
“Sabi ko naman sa mga nag-o-offer sa akin na kung sakali mag-aano ako sa inyo, gusto ko huwag ninyo ako pakialaman sa ABAP at kung ano yung training camp ng ABAP, kung ano yung mga tournament ng ABAP... kasi yung focus, yung pinaghahandaan ko is Olympics,” he said.
“Actually lahat naman ng nag-o-offer, yun naman din yung gusto nila, na suportahan ako para sa Olympics,” he added.
