Petron coach on streaking Blaze Spikers: 'Our biggest opponent is ourselves'

MANILA, Philippines – After posting eight straight victories, it seems that nobody can beat Petron in the ongoing Philippine Superliga Grand Prix.

But head coach Shaq Delos Santos begged to disagree.

“Our biggest opponent is ourselves,” said Delos Santos, who is looking to lead the Blaze Spikers to another Grand Prix title.

“It’s good that we are having this long winning streak, but we have to be humble and avoid being complacent. We have to give our best and play each game as we are the underdogs.”

True enough, it seems that Petron is indestructible this season.

The Blaze Spikers won all of the sets in their first five matches before running into their former import Lindsay Stalzer and her new team in F2 Logistics.

The Cargo Movers took the first set before the Blaze Spiker regained their bearings and pulled off a 23-25, 25-14, 25-22, 25-18 victory.  

Since then, Petron was unstoppable as it destroyed Cignal and Foton and would march against the HD Spikers again on Saturday at the Alonte Sports Arena oozing with pride and confidence.

Delos Santos said imports Katherine Bell and Stephanie Niemer are in high spirits as well as the solid support crew of local stars Aiza Maizo-Pontillas, Mika Reyes, Denden Lazaro, Rhea Dimaculangan, Remy Palma and Frances Molina.

Still, their eyes are on the prize.

“I’m always telling my players about our ultimate goal,” said Delos Santos.

“I’m sure they are aware of that so no need to worry.”
