Yeng Guiao, staff commended for forming fighting team

Nelson Beltran - The Philippine Star

JAKARTA – National coach Yeng Guiao and his able staff drew praises for getting Team Phl to play as a cohesive unit from a mere 10-day preparation.

“Gilas showed great chemistry in such a short time. Offensive system was in rhythm and defensive coverage was solid. They played with so much cohesion that you have a feeling that they’ve been playing for a long time,” said Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas president Al Panlilio.

“Credit to coach Yeng Guiao for preparing the team to be mentally strong and focused,” Panlilio also said.

Guiao, meanwhile, deflected the praises to his staff, including Caloy Garcia, Ryan Gregorio and Ford Arao.

“We prepared a defensive scheme. Anticipation was good and that’s because of the scouting that we did. Credit to my coaching staff,” said Guiao.

“We expected a close game; a rugged, physical game. But the preparation was good, making the guys mentally tough,” Guiao added.

On social media, Guiao and his staff were commended for a good job.

“Great D fueling that good start,” said suspended Gilas coach Chot Reyes on his Twitter account.

Phoenix coach Louie Alas said great individual and team defense forced the Kazakhs to miss their shots.

“The main reason Kazakhs missed open treys they’re a little fatigued from our overall defense,” said Alas on his own Twitter page.
