Vivas, Estanislao cop Prima badminton men's doubles title

MANILA, Philippines - Veteran players Paul Vivas and Ronel Estanislao captured the 2012 Prima Pasta Invitational Badminton Open men’s doubles open title recently by beating Joper Escueta and Ariel Magnaye, 21-18, 21-16, at the Powersmash court in Makati City.

Vivas and Estanislao, displaying impressive teamwork in both sets, were not threatened by their opponents after taking a huge lead in the second set, 20-14, on the way to winning the four-day tournament organized by Alex Lim.

In other results, Marky Alcala took home the boy’s singles 17 and 15-and-under title of the tournament supported by Prima Pasta, Boysen Paints, Morning Star Milling, RFM, Vit Water, Mabz Builders, Pioneer Life, Prince Badminton Rackets, ILO Construction, Monolith Construction, Promax Intl., and Amstar.

The 12-year-old Alcala, the younger brother of national player Malvinne “Poca” Alcala, overcame a poor start to upset Elijah Boac, 21-23, 21-18, 21-13, and capture the boys singles 17-and-under crown and then won the boys 15-under singles after whipping Jerickson Oba-ob, 21-16, 21-15, for second title.

Jana De Vera of Whackers blanked Mary Ann Maranon, 21-13, 22-20, to grab the girls singles 17-and-under title, while she bested Diane Castro of JC Badminton Club, 21-14, 21-15, to also snatch the girls singles 19-under trophy.

Other singles division champions were Erica Bautista (girl’s 11 under); Iya Sevilla (girl’s 13 under); Beatriz Bernardo (girl’s 15-under); Earl Baes (boy’s 11 under); and Joaquin Pangilinan (boy’s 13 under).

In the doubles classes, the champions were Jhun Majorenos and Orlan Ticala (men’s class C); Noli Arcilla and Chris Osea (men’s class E); Jovelle Allera and Jason Uy (men’s class D); and Anthony Florentino and Cleto Obello (men’s class G).
