Bago City opens P30M sanitary landfill

- Danny B. Dangcalan -

BAGO CITY, Philippines  — The Bago City government has recently opened its P30 million sanitary landfill at sitio Pandan in Barangay Ma-ao of this city.

City Mayor Ramon Torres said the 3-hectare sanitary landfill, which is expected to serve the 34 barangays of the city, was established in compliance with the Solid Waste Management law and the city government's share in the preservation of the environment.

The opening and blessing ceremonies of the landfill was attended by Negros Occidental Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. and other provincial and city officials.

Director Oscar C. Cabanayan of the DENR-Environment Management Bureau for Region 6 in his message, congratulated the Bago LGU for its investment against climate change.

"Having the landfill is just the start of the work to be done in solid waste management, the bigger work is on operating the landfill," Cabanayan told local officials.

Torres, for his part, said he hoped this will pave the way for other LGUs to follow suit for the sake of the environment.

Marañon said the Bago sanitary landfill is the first in the south of Bacolod and the third in the province following the cities of San Carlos and Sagay.

"This shows that with the hard work of the local officials and if the finances of the LGUs are put into good use, something can be done," Marañon said. (FREEMAN)
