The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Singapore Embassy is accepting applications for the Singapore Scholarship for academic year 2013/2014. The scholarship is awarded by the Singapore Government. This undergraduate scholarship is tenable at the National University of Singapore, the Nanyang Technological University and the Singapore Management University. Except for Medicine, Dentistry, Architecture and Law, all other disciplines are open to recipients of the scholarship.

Each award is tenable for three to four years of tertiary study, depending on the discipline, and it covers returns airfare, full tuition fees, a living allowance of $4,300 (approximately P142,000) per annum, and an accommodation allowance. Scholars are selected on the basis of academic merit, leadership qualities and their potential to contribute to the Philippines’ development. They are expected to return to contribute to their home countries upon graduation.

The Singapore Scholarship was announced by then Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong at the 6th ASEAN Summit in Hanoi in December 1998 to help alleviate the problem of educating young people in the ASEAN countries due to the Asian financial crisis. It underlines Singapore’s firm belief that human resource development is key to economic development, and that training and education is vital to success in this age of globalization.

Applicants must be Filipino citizens with excellent academic records and a good command of English. A recipient of the Scholarship may not concurrently hold any other scholarship, fellowship, grant or award without prior approval of the Singapore Government. Applicants must be in their first or second year college/university or are now completing their final year in high school. Shortlisted nominees will take the entrance examinations set by the Singapore universities. Nominees are further shortlisted based on their entrance examination results and will undergo an interview conducted by interviewers from the Singapore universities.

Applications for the scholarship must be submitted on the prescribed form, available at the Singapore Embassy or may be downloaded from the website: http://www.mfa.gov.sg/scp.
