Over 2,000 families affected by Binondo fire; Manila LGU to give aid

MANILA, Philippines — More than 2,000 families were affected by the fire in Parola Compound, San Nicolas in Binondo, Manila, the Manila local government unit (LGU) said.
According to a spot report sent at 11:59 a.m. on Sunday, May 24, the Manila LGU said that 2,134 families were affected by the fire. This translates to 7,123 individuals.
The fire started at 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 23 and was declared out at 12:17 a.m. The fire reached Task Force Charlie, according to the Bureau of Fire Protection.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The Philippine Coast Guard also assisted in response operations after the fire broke out.
According to media reports, 500 families are currently staying at the Del Pan evacuation center.
In an ambush interview with reporters, Manila Mayor Isko Moreno said that financial assistance will be provided by the city government to help residents rebuild their homes.
The total cost of the financial assistance, according to Domagoso, is estimated at P15 million.
“Ang goal namin, makabalik kagad sila, to start rebuilding, with the help of the city government,” Domagoso said.
