BAGUIO CITY, Philippines — Baguio Mayor Benjamin Magalong has warned residents against patronizing unauthorized angkas or motorcycle-for-hire services due to safety concerns.

Magalong said the growing presence of unregulated motorcycle taxis poses risks to commuters, noting drivers lack proper safety training and passengers are not covered by insurance.

He said the operation of unauthorized motorcycle taxis worsens traffic and increases the likelihood of road accidents, particularly along steep and uphill roads.

“Besides, there is no clear accountability on the part of drivers involved in these unregulated operations,” Magalong said.

He said the Department of Transportation-Cordillera confirmed that no permit has been issued for angkas operation or no person or company is authorized to provide motorcycle-for-hire services in Baguio.

Magalong said he has recommended the revocation of licenses of drivers of motor taxis.
