MANILA, Philippines — The country may experience El Niño beginning in the third quarter of the year, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration.

PAGASA said the weather phenomenon, which brings drought and dry spell, may develop between July and September.

PAGASA deputy administrator Joseph Basconcillo said there is a 62-percent chance of El Niño occurring during these months.

PAGASA deputy administrator Shirley David said the effects of El Niño may vary in every locality, particularly in areas that will be affected by the southwest monsoon or habagat, which will still bring near-normal to above normal rainfall during the extreme weather phenomenon.

The public has been advised to properly manage the country’s water and energy resources to cushion the impact of El Niño.

PAGASA said that eight to 16 tropical cyclones may likely enter the Philippine area of responsibility from April to September.
