MANILA, Philippines — Two people died and 16 others were injured when a passenger jeepney collided with two vehicles along Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City yesterday.

According to the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), the victims were passengers of a jeepney bound for Philcoa.

Responders from the Quezon City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office said the two fatalities died at the scene.

Sixteen passengers suffered injuries. They were taken to the East Avenue Medical Center for treatment.

Traffic investigators said the accident occurred in front of the Commonwealth Market at 6:48 a.m.

The MMDA said the jeepney was reportedly speeding when it crashed into a Toyota Vios and an electric jeep.

Traffic along the eastbound lane of Commonwealth Avenue was snarled as two lanes were blocked by the vehicles.

The jeepney driver, Chito Tabilog, 37, was taken into police custody.

Quezon City police director Brig. Gen. Melecio Buslig Jr. said charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide, physical injuries and damage to property would be filed against Tabilog.
