MANILA, Philippines — Seen as a significant milestone in Philippine history, the Quezon City government on Thursday inaugurated the country’s first-ever women’s museum.

The Tandang Sora Women’s Museum – named after Melchora Aquino, Mother of the Philippine Revolution – pays tribute “to the countless women who have shaped the nation through courage, resilience and leadership.”

“This museum is more than just a collection of artifacts. It is a testament to the strength, struggles and triumphs of Filipino women throughout history,” Mayor Joy Belmonte said.

“Through its exhibits, we hope to inspire the next generation to continue advocating for equality, justice and progress,” she added.

Located at the Tandang Sora National Shrine, the museum provides visitors with a rich and interactive journey about the role of women in Philippine history.

The museum’s ground floor contains a creativity corner, an audio-visual section and an exhibit space that will feature rotating displays about women’s contributions to art, culture and advocacy.

The second floor contains the “HERstorical Philippine Timeline,” which features the role of women in faith, leadership, peacebuilding and revolution.

“This section provides a detailed account of the babaylan as spiritual leaders, the rise of women-led labor unions and the evolution of female participation in politics, arts, science and media,” the city government said.

There is also a dedicated gallery called “Women in Action,” which “showcases progressive materials and memorabilia from various feminist movements, highlighting the resilience and activism of women’s organizations that have shaped the country’s socio-political landscape.”

Sen. Risa Hontiveros, whose office funded the establishment of the museum, served as the keynote speaker during the inauguration.

“This museum is not just about remembering history, it’s about empowering women today and in the future. We honor the legacies of those who came before us and we pave the way for those who will come after,” she said.

The museum was designed and renovated by ARC LICO, a research and design studio headed by renowned architect Gerard Lico.

Tapped as museum curator is artist, educator and feminist Sandra Torrijos.
