MANILA, Philippines — The volume of vehicles passing through EDSA dropped amid the rising prices of fuel products, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) reported yesterday.

The MMDA estimated that around 392,000 cars traversed EDSA on June 9. The figure was lower than the 417,000 vehicles that passed through the busiest thoroughfare in Metro Manila on May 5.

“This is also lower than the average daily volume of 405,000 cars on EDSA before the COVID-19 pandemic struck,” MMDA general manager Romando Artes said.

Artes said car owners opt not to use their vehicles as pump prices continue to surge.

Oil firms are expected to implement another round of fuel price hikes today.

Diesel and kerosene prices will go up by P4.30 and P4.85 per liter, respectively. Gasoline prices are poised to rise by P2.15 per liter.

Some jeepney drivers have also said they no longer want to ply their routes and prefer to find other sources of livelihood due to the fuel price surge.
