CHR probes attack on CA REG100413 avite priest

Janvic Mateo - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) will conduct an independent investigation into the attack on a priest in Cavite who was reported missing and later found alive with his hands tied in his vehicle in Silang town.

The CHR expressed grave concern over the incident involving Fr. Leoben Peregrino, rector and parish priest of the diocesan shrine and parish of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary.

Peregrino was reported missing on April 1 after leaving his parish in Rosario to buy candles.

The CHR urged the Philippine National Police to pursue the case “until the truth behind the incident is determined and its perpetrators are held to account.”

“Involuntary disappearance by way of kidnapping or similar means is a serious human rights violation,” the CHR said in a statement. “It impinges on an individual’s right to liberty and security and, in extreme cases, may even result in violation of the right to life.”

Police have yet to release a full report on the case.
