Van hits tree: 1 dead, 12 hurt

MANILA, Philippines — A woman died and 12 others were injured when a UV Express commuter van crashed into a tree in Quezon City on Tuesday night.

Aurora Bulan, 54, succumbed to massive injuries she suffered in the accident, which occurred in Barangay Bagumbuhay at 11:26 p.m.

Lt. Vincent Dominic Lucina, who heads the Quezon City Police District Traffic Sector 3, said the van was traversing P. Tuazon Boulevard when the driver, Rhodium Cadiz, lost control of the steering wheel.

The vehicle crashed into a tree along Kalantiaw street and turned on its left side.

Bulan, who was a passenger of the van, died at the scene.

Cadiz and 11 other passengers were injured. Rescuers brought them to the Quirino Memorial Medical Center for treatment.

Traffic probers said video footage showed Cadiz was speeding.

The van came from EDSA and was headed to Katipunan Avenue when the accident happened, police said.

Police said charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and multiple physical injuries would be filed against Cadiz.
