BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — Two suspected New People’s Army (NPA) guerrillas died in an encounter in Ilog, Negros Occidental on Saturday.

Soldiers from the Army’s 15th Infantry Battalion (IB) were patrolling in Barangay Pinggot when they figured in an encounter with at least 10 guerrillas, according to Maj. Cenon Pancito, spokesman for the Army’s 3rd Infantry Division.

The rebels reatreated, leaving behind their slain comrades.

Troopers recovered firearms, ammunition, bomb paraphernalia and personal belongings at the scene of the clash.

Authorities have yet to identify the slain guerrillas.

Four days earlier, soldiers buried two rebels killed in another firefight that occurred in nearby Hinobaan town.

The municipal government facilitated the burial of the guerrillas after no family members claimed the bodies, according to Lt. Col. Erwin Carino, spokesman for the 15th IB.
