700 inmates infected with coronavirus
MANILA, Philippines — More than 700 inmates have contracted the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
Chief Inspector Xavier Solda, Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) spokesman, said the infected inmates comprise 0.57 percent of 129,260 inmates in 467 jails across the country.
At least 388 of the infected inmates have recovered while six died. A total of 351 are still undergoing treatment.
Cebu City jail posted the highest number of COVID-19 cases, with 352, followed by Mandaue City jail, with 153 cases.
Ten of the 105 cases recorded in Cebu City yesterday are inmates. There are now 3,194 confirmed cases in the city.
The BJMP said 125 jail personnel nationwide were also infected.
Sixty-five have recovered while the rest are still being treated.
The BJMP suspended jail visits to protect its inmates and personnel.
In Zamboanga City, 24 of the 216 inmates released on court orders are among the new confirmed cases.
