2 slain in Sulu anti-drug clash

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — A police officer and an informer were killed while another was wounded in an alleged encounter with suspected drug traffickers in Indanan, Sulu yesterday morning.

The fatalities were identified as Lt. Sali Salem, team leader of the Sulu police drug enforcement unit, and alias “Jipon.”

Pat. Alkajar Mandangan was taken to a hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds.

Reports said that Salem’s team was conducting an anti-drug operation in Barangay Tagbak when they encountered a group of suspected drug traffickers at around 10 a.m.

The suspects, identified as Alvin Kiyara, Aldakar Jalain, Utong Jinul, alias “Dok” and alias “Tam” reportedly opened fire at the officers, killing two of them.

A brief firefight ensued before the suspects escaped. 

Police launched a manhunt for the suspects.
