DAVAO CITY – Secretary Abul Khayr Dangcal Alonto, the first Muslim appointed to the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA), died on Thursday night. He was 73.

Alonto, who reportedly suffered chest pains, underwent angioplasty, but died due to complications of pneumonia in a hospital in Quezon City.

Alonto’s remains were flown to his hometown in Lanao del Sur yesterday for burial according to Muslim rites.

Alonto organized the LAM ALIF, a Muslim youth group in the late 60s, whose members became core leaders of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF).

He was elected vice mayor of Marawi in 1972 and acting mayor in 1974 before he went underground during the martial law regime.

Alonto was also elected assemblyman in 1979 and named MNLF chairman in 2014.

He was a known supporter of the Bangsamoro Organic Law, which led to the establishment of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.

Presidential spokesman Salvador Panelo said President Duterte condoled with the family of Alonto.

“The Palace expresses its deep sympathies and condolences to the family, friends, colleagues and loved ones of the late Secretary Datu Abul Khayr Dangcal Alonto,” Panelo added.

Malacañang also paid tribute to Alonto for his contribution to the socioeconomic development of Mindanao during his stint at MinDA.

“The nation is grateful for his service... We are confident that his legacy will continue to inspire leaders, government workers and the people to advance the cause of peace and development in Mindanao,” Panelo said.  – Christina Mendez
