Firearms-for-cash fund eyed for Mecca pilgrims

- Lino De La Cruz -
MARAWI CITY — Authorities here are planning to set up a fund so those who want to join the annual pilgrimage to Mecca next month but lack money for their travel documents, plane fare and other expenses, can exchange their firearms for cash.

Jerry Tomawis, director of the Office of Muslim Affairs here, confirmed the proposal, adding, though, that they are looking into its viability and possible sources of funds.

Tomawis said at least 100 slots have been allotted for indigent but deserving pilgrims. In the past, some politicians sponsored the annual pilgrimage of poor but deserving Muslims.

Under the government’s peace program, former rebels are compensated for the firearms they surrender. The military determines the amount based on the firearms’ condition, age and make.

Muslims will observe a month-long fasting during Ramadan starting Oct. 4. The annual pilgrimage to Mecca is one of the highlights of this observance.

Tomawis said a pilgrim needs about P100,000 to join the pilgrimage.
