BFP-7 warns against buying substandard Christmas lights

Mitchelle L. Palaubsanon - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — As the holiday season begins in the country, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP)-7 has urged the public to buy only certified Christmas lights and electrical decorations, noting that substandard decorations often caused fire incidents the previous years.

Speaking on the sidelines of the 2026 Christmas tree lighting ceremony at the Cebu City Fire Station, BFP-7 Regional Director Fire Chief Superintendent Rodolfo P. Denaga warned consumers against purchasing substandard decorations, particularly those sold cheaply.

He advised the public to check for the Philippine Standard (PS) mark on locally manufactured products and the Import Commodity Clearance (ICC) mark on imported products, which indicate that covered products have undergone the required safety and quality assessment.

Denaga also reminded households to switch off and unplug Christmas lights and other electrically operated decorations before going to bed or leaving their homes.

He said the BFP has intensified its fire prevention efforts through house-to-house inspections, regular fire safety patrols and weekly reminders to communities.

He encouraged residents to cooperate with firefighters conducting inspections, stressing that these activities are intended to identify potential fire hazards and protect lives and properties.

Denaga acknowledged that previous holiday seasons had recorded fires linked to the improper use of Christmas decorations. He emphasized that fire prevention requires the cooperation of both firefighters and the community.

Meanwhile, Cebu City Fire Marshal Fire Superintendent Tito Purgatorio said the annual Christmas tree lighting marks the kickoff of the country’s world-renowned Christmas season, which traditionally begins as early as September.

He said Christmas symbolizes faith, unity, bayanihan, hope, resilience, and the resourcefulness of Filipinos.

Purgatorio also stressed that the BFP’s responsibility goes beyond responding to fires and emergencies, as firefighters are tasked to protect lives and properties and provide hope and reassurance to communities.

The ceremony carried the theme “Beyond the Flames: A Christmas of Love and Hope.” — (FREEMAN)
