DTI: No need for price freeze on bottled water

MANILA, Philippines — A price freeze on bottled water is not necessary for now as prices remain stable, Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Secretary Cristina Roque said yesterday.
“For now, there is none. There is no need because the prices of basic necessities and prime commodities, bottled water included, are all stable and no price increase,” Roque said.
Under the Price Act, prices of basic necessities are automatically frozen at prevailing prices when an area is placed under a state of calamity.
With the El Niño expected to intensify and persist until early next year, the government is taking steps to mitigate its impact.
As part of preparations, government agencies have been directed to implement measures to prevent water shortages and severe drought.
Earlier this month, the DTI assured the public of enough supply of bottled water in the market. It also urged consumers not to hoard amid El Niño.
The DTI has been monitoring prices of bottled water in the market. It is also working with manufacturers and distributors to ensure steady supply in the market.
The agency is likewise addressing consumer complaints on overpriced plastic drums, water containers and other related commodities.
The DTI has warned that overpricing and other violations would lead to fines, penalties and other sanctions under applicable laws. – Alexis Romero, Josiah Antonio
