MANILA, Philippines — Despite the alarming increase in pertussis cases in the country, an official of the Department of Health (DOH) said there is no need for a lockdown or mandatory wearing of face masks.

“We want to make it clear that there is no lockdown, and the wearing of face masks is not mandatory,” DOH Undersecretary Eric Tayag said in a televised briefing yesterday.

Tayag added, “What is important is you determine the possible risks to your health. If you are a senior citizen already and you feel unwell, this (wearing of mask) will be of great help.”

He warned that pertussis affects the breathing of babies and they can turn pale or blue.

“It is scary. Even older children and adults can get pertussis. The sign would be continuous violent coughing and you won’t be able to sleep at night because of this,” Tayag pointed out.

However, he said the good thing is that in case of infection, there are available antibiotics.

“This is caused by a bacteria. This is not due to a virus. Those who are worried because they were not given pertussis vaccine, remember to also observe health protocols,” Tayag added.

To be safe, he advised the public, especially those suffering from colds, to wear masks, frequently wash hands with soap and water and use alcohol.

The DOH earlier said around one million doses of pertussis vaccine are expected to arrive in the country by June. The health department said this pentavalent vaccine, which also provides protection to children against diphtheria, tetanus, hepatitis B and Haemophilus influenza type B, is seen to boost the government’s vaccination drive.

Latest data from the DOH showed that during the first 10 weeks of this year, 453 cases of pertussis were recorded.
